Honorary Patent Counsellor Pia Hjelt (M.Sc.) handles the patenting of inventions relating to chemistry and the paper industry. As a European Patent Attorney, she manages both national and international patent applications (including the EPO). She acts as an expert in patent litigation cases and advises on patent rights in general. She also gives statements regarding the interpretation of patents and she lectures at different seminars.

Pia has been a prominent figure at BORENIUS & Co already since 1975, and in 1980 she became the owner of the then family-owned company. Pia acted as the managing director of BORENIUS & Co until 2007; at present, she mainly concentrates on customer work. Before her employment at BORENIUS & Co, Pia worked as an examiner at the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland. Pia is one of the most experienced and esteemed experts in the field, which is also reflected in the title Honorary Patent Counsellor granted to her by the President of the Republic of Finland in 2006.

Pia is a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys and she has also acted as the chairman of the association (1996 to 1997). Pia has participated in drafting almost all of the amendments of the patent and utility model law since 1985 up to the 21st century, and she was a member of the working group relating to the IPR court of the Ministry of Justice as well as the IPR strategy control group of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. During her career, she has held several confidential posts, acting for instance as a member of the working group for IP matters in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Finnish representative in the board of the European Patent Institute (epi) (1996 to 1998), member of the board of the Finnish AIPPI Group (up to 2003), and as the Finnish representative in SACEPO (up to 2006). She is also a member of the following associations: AIPPI, CIPA, epi, FICPI, LES, UNION, the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights), and the Association of Finnish Chemical Societies.

Pia holds a Master of Science in chemistry. Her language skills are excellent: in addition to her mother tongue Swedish, she speaks Finnish, English and German.

On her free time, Pia enjoys gardening.

Patent Attorney Karri Leskinen (M.Sc.) specializes in inventions relating to chemistry, especially inventions relating to the food and process industries. Karri actively participates in drafting and implementing the customers’ IPR strategies. He handles both national and international patent applications. In addition, Karri acts as an expert in patent litigation cases, gives statements on the interpretation of patents, and advises on patent rights in general. He also gives lectures in various connections.

Karri has worked as a patent attorney at BORENIUS & Co since 2005; in 2007, he was appointed as the managing director and a partner of the company. Karri has acted as a patent attorney since 1999.

He holds a Master of Science in chemistry, specializing in polymer chemistry and factory planning. His language skills are good: in addition to his mother tongue Finnish, he speaks English, Swedish and German.

Karri is a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys; his positions of trust include being chairman (2004 to 2008) and secretary (2002 to 2004) of the association’s chemist group. He is also a member of FICPI, AIPPI, and the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights.

Karri’s leisure interests include golf, snowboarding, music, and reading.

Patrick Hjelt has worked at BORENIUS & Co since the year 1997 and as IT manager since 2006. He is in charge of the company’s ICT operations and security matters.

Patrick holds a degree in Military Science (management systems). In addition he has studied information technology. Besides his mother tongue Swedish, Patrick speaks Finnish and English.

Patrick’s free time interests include national defence and the volunteer fire brigade.

Patent Attorney Silvio Hjelt (M.Sc.) is a European Patent Attorney, a European Design Attorney as well as a registered patent attorney in Finland. He handles the patenting of inventions relating to mainly construction, mechanical and electrical engineering both nationally and internationally – including the European Patent Office. In addition, he handles matters related to utility models and designs. He consults customers regarding the utilization of patent rights and he lectures at seminars in the field.

Silvio came to BORENIUS & Co in the year 1980 as he became an owner of the then family-owned company. Previously he worked in the metal industry and as a consultant.

Silvio holds a Master of Science in construction engineering. In addition to his mother tongue Swedish, Silvio speaks Finnish, English and German.

Silvio is a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys and he is an authorized patent attorney by the Scandinavian Patent Attorney Society, Patentkonsulters Samfund. In addition, he is a member of the following associations: FICPI, AIPPI, epi, the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights, Association of Finnish Civil Engineers (RIL ry) and Tekniska Föreningen i Finland rf (TFiF).

Silvio’s hobbies include the volunteer fire brigade and brass band music.

Patent Attorney Jonna Sahlin (M.Sc.) takes care of a wide range of industrial rights matters for her customers, specializing in the fields of chemistry, medical science, and diagnostics. She advices the customers in matters relating to industrial rights strategy. She acts a registered patent attorney in Finland and handles the patenting of inventions both on a national and international level. Jonna also performs freedom-to-operate analyses and gives statements on the interpretation of patents.

Jonna has worked at BORENIUS & Co since 1998; in 2005 she was appointed as a partner.

Jonna is the chairman of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys (since 2010), and between 2002 and 2004 she also acted as the chairman of the association’s chemist group. She has actively participated in the cooperation of Nordic patent attorneys in the field of chemistry. She is also a member of the following associations: FICPI, UNION, the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights, and the Association of Finnish Chemical Societies.

Jonna holds a Master of Science in the field of chemistry, and she specialized in food technology and polymer technology. In addition to her mother tongue Swedish, Jonna speaks Finnish, English and German.

Jonna’s free time activities include scouting and sports.

Marjukka Hausalo started working at BORENIUS & Co in the year 2006 and she is in charge of the company’s financial management. Marjukka can be contacted in matters concerning invoices and payment transactions.
