Honorary Patent Counsellor Pia Hjelt (M.Sc.) handles the patenting of inventions relating to chemistry and the paper industry. As a European Patent Attorney, she manages both national and international patent applications (including the EPO). She acts as an expert in patent litigation cases and advises on patent rights in general. She also gives statements regarding the interpretation of patents and she lectures at different seminars.
Pia has been a prominent figure at BORENIUS & Co already since 1975, and in 1980 she became the owner of the then family-owned company. Pia acted as the managing director of BORENIUS & Co until 2007; at present, she mainly concentrates on customer work. Before her employment at BORENIUS & Co, Pia worked as an examiner at the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland. Pia is one of the most experienced and esteemed experts in the field, which is also reflected in the title Honorary Patent Counsellor granted to her by the President of the Republic of Finland in 2006.
Pia is a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys and she has also acted as the chairman of the association (1996 to 1997). Pia has participated in drafting almost all of the amendments of the patent and utility model law since 1985 up to the 21st century, and she was a member of the working group relating to the IPR court of the Ministry of Justice as well as the IPR strategy control group of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. During her career, she has held several confidential posts, acting for instance as a member of the working group for IP matters in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Finnish representative in the board of the European Patent Institute (epi) (1996 to 1998), member of the board of the Finnish AIPPI Group (up to 2003), and as the Finnish representative in SACEPO (up to 2006). She is also a member of the following associations: AIPPI, CIPA, epi, FICPI, LES, UNION, the Finnish Association for Industrial Property Rights), and the Association of Finnish Chemical Societies.
Pia holds a Master of Science in chemistry. Her language skills are excellent: in addition to her mother tongue Swedish, she speaks Finnish, English and German.
On her free time, Pia enjoys gardening.
